The President, Mr A Ward, had submitted apologies. In his absence, the Meeting appointed Mr AR Tuddenham, to the chair.

1.       Apologies    President (A Ward), G Peake, R Keeley, AG Midgley, MK Newsome

2.       Minutes        2003 AGM minutes were read and approved (E Priestly/JV Newsome).

3.       Arising

Mr Tuddenham remarked on the change of day for the FW Rapidplay Tournament from Sunday to Saturday. Some members expressed their preference to revert to the traditional Sunday. Mr Newsome however, who has acted as Controller for many years, indicated that he would not be free for a Sunday date, for another two years. The Meeting recommended therefore that we continue with a Saturday for the time being.

4.       President’s Report

Mr Ward had been obliged to submit an apology for absence, at short notice. There was no President’s report.

5.       Secretary’s Report

·      Mr Lumley thanked all players, secretaries, and other officials who had helped to make for another (his 27th) enjoyable chess season. Special thanks to John Newsome for again controlling the Rapidplay event, and Dave Tooley for looking after the Individual K. O. with assistance from Edgar Priestley. Special thanks to Paul Jackson for producing the Bill Lumley Rapidplay fixtures, with some assistance from Peter Shaw. Thanks also on behalf of the Association, to those Clubs which had kindly hosted these fixtures-David Browns, Brighouse, Huddersfield and Netherton. We were particularly indebted to Netherton, who hosted a second set of fixtures when Chartist had problems with their room. It was unfortunate that Brighouse were unable to field a team on the ‘finals’ night.

·      Congratulations to all winners, and all players who had participated throughout the year. The Association had welcomed Wakefield, who had entered the Examiner Handicap Competition for the first time, and had come very close to winning the Plate.

·      Entry forms for next season were available, these to be returned by the end of July. All Clubs were asked to return their Player registration details by this date also. Some DOB’s were still missing. Secretaries were asked to do their best to obtain these as they greatly helped the Graders avoid name confusion.

·      YCA gradings: Our results had been sent to the new YCA Grader, Mr AJ Griffith of York by the end of June, as requested. These would be incorporated in the YCA preliminary list, which the Grader expected to be available by the end of August. Thanks to Geoff Peake who kept a check on all results and assisted greatly in chasing up outstanding results. The Secretary did not have a copy of Individual KO results which were to be included in this submission to YCA. The Grader gave assurances that they would be included in the published grading list.

·      Mr Lumley paid tribute to the outstanding contribution to the Association of a number of stalwart members – mainly secretaries, who were responsible for keeping their Club together for a very long time. Many Clubs owed their continued existence to the efforts of these individuals, all of whom have been actively supporting their Club for the past 30 years or more!

Brighouse:    Brian Herriott had a long association with ICI CC, before moving on to Brighouse.

Chartist:       Roger Tuddenham was active at Huddersfield New College, before developing Denby Dale CC, which was subsequently to become Chartist.

David Browns:         Alec Ward has been the catalyst at David Browns, formerly Britannia Works.

Dewsbury:               Shane Inglis has done a similar task at Dewsbury.

Huddersfield:           Edgar Priestley’s efforts on behalf of the Association are immeasurable, going back significantly more than 30 years! Tony Midgley has had the Association interest at heart for over 3 decades, and has served on the Handicap Committee for most of that period.

Holme Valley:                    Roger Keeley was instrumental in introducing Holme Valley CC in 1980. So although Roger has not yet passed the 30 year barrier, he has in fact performed the duty of holding the Club together for 24 years.

Netherton:    John Newsome’s energy in developing Netherton Family CC, and his efforts on behalf of the Association have been of gigantic proportions.

In mentioning these long serving Club officials, my purpose is in no way to forget the admirable efforts of other current officials – Nigel Hepworth at Huddersfield, Paul Jackson at Netherton and more recently, Geoff Peake at Holme Valley. The point I am attempting to make, is that all our affiliated Clubs owe a great deal to a number of devoted and dedicated members who have ensured the continuity of their Clubs.

YCA Affiliation: As instructed by the last AGM, I made a number of enquiries regarding the Association’s request to officially affiliate to YCA. Unfortunately I received no responses, even though I personally spoke to the YCA President on 2 occasions.

In conclusion Mr Lumley indicated that that the coming year would be his 28th year as Association Secretary, and that he would not be standing for election at the next AGM.

12.          Treasurer’s Report

Mr Firth produced the Accounts for the year ending 31 March 2004.

This showed that income was up slightly due to:

13.           New Club and Team entry from Wakefield

14.           Changes to entry fee for Bill Lumley Rapidplay

15.           Increase in entry fee for Individual KO

On the expenditure, excluding the purchase of new trophy (Rapidplay), the total is about the same as last year-the increase in trophies and engraving expenses being offset by a reduction in secretary’s expenses. Treasurer saw no reason to change entry fees. The balance sheet showed a surplus for the year of £45.58, with net assets of £447.62.

The Accounts were accepted unanimously, and a vote of thanks to Mr Firth, was proposed by Mr Newsome, supported by Mr Priestley and Mr Jackson.

16.          Fees for 2004-2005

Treasurer proposed that these be unchanged at £5 per Club and £10 per team. R Boylan and E Priestley seconded this proposal, which was accepted.

Mr Priestley informed the Meeting that he had been in touch with the Examiner, regarding the possibility of having match results published weekly, once again. Tony Pogson at the Examiner had indicated that he was hopeful that this could be achieved in some form or other for the next chess season.

Mr Priestley then updated Members on the progress of the booklet, which he had produced with the outstanding support of the Huddersfield Secretary, Nigel Hepworth. The short publication outlined the History of the Huddersfield and District Chess Association from the early days of 1894 to the present. The acting Chairman, Mr Tuddenham, applauded Edgar’s achievement in producing this document, and also the professional support from Nigel Hepworth in putting it in to print. The Secretary proposed that Mr Hepworth be invited to submit a statement of expenses for printing etc. which the Association would be pleased to consider. This was seconded by Mr Newsome and carried unanimously.

Mr Hepworth raised the matter of BCF Game Fee Scheme, suggesting that we should look at this again, with a view to giving support in the future. This met with a lukewarm response! Mr Lumley pointed out that current details of the Scheme, with costs, were posted on the BCF website.

The Meeting closed at 9-15 pm
