1. Apologies R Keely, JV Newsome, BJ Herriot, D Tooley
2. Minutes 2004 AGM minutes were approved (E
Priestly/AR Tuddenham).
3. Arising Mr Priestley commented on the fact
that coverage of match results in the Huddersfield Examiner, had been much
better this year, and we were grateful for this support.
4. President’s
Report
Mr Ward looked back on a
successful year. Netherton Family Chess Club had again virtually ‘swept the
board’, although Holme Valley were to be congratulated in preventing a clean
sweep by taking the Bill Lumley Rapidplay Trophy. Mr Ward apologised to the Association
for the behaviour of one of his members during the first round of the
Individual KO. An unfortunate misunderstanding at the conclusion of the game had
resulted in some unsavoury conduct, which caused the incident to be ‘blown out
of all proportion’. The President concluded by thanking all players and
officials, with a special thanks to the retiring Secretary who was completing a
‘remarkable 28 years in office!’
5. Secretary’s
Report
Mr Lumley thanked all
players, secretaries, and other officials who had helped to make his 28th
and final year as Association Secretary a success. Congratulations to all
winners, and all players who had participated throughout the year.
Unfortunately, because of difficulties in finding a suitable date and venue, it
had not been possible to schedule the FW Brown 6 round Rapidplay Competition.
It was hoped that it would be possible to fit this in before the end of this
calendar year. Mr Lumley saved most of his report to a few fond memories of the
past 28 years during which he had served the Association as Secretary. Bill
recalled vividly the day back in 1978 when Brian Herriot rang his office at the
University, inviting him to accept the post of Secretary. Little did he know
that more than a quarter of a century would pass before he would empty his
filing cabinet. During this time Bill had met many friends through playing and
administering Chess in the Huddersfield & District Association. He was
delighted and confident that his successor, Geoff Peake, would enjoy his term
in office, and that his undoubted expertise and energy would carry the
Association forward.
12.
Treasurer’s Report
Mr
Firth produced the Accounts for the year ending 31 May 2005.
Treasurer
saw no reason to change entry fees. The balance sheet showed a surplus for the
year of £18.94, with net assets of £466.56
The
Accounts were accepted unanimously, and a vote of thanks to Mr Firth, was
proposed by Mr RS Boylan, supported by Mr AG Midgley
13.
Fees for 2005-2006
The affiliation fees of £5
per Club and £10 per team (£5 for Bill Lumley Rapidplay) had been unchanged for
many years now. Mr Tuddenham spoke eloquently and with good humour questioning
the need to maintain these levels of income in view of the fact that we had a
reasonable sum of assets in the bank. As usual, this fell on deaf ears. Mr
Tuddenham then proposed that the fees remain unchanged for 2005-06. This was
seconded by RS Boylan and carried unanimously.

Mr
Priestley remarked on the incident at the Individual KO, and the fact that no
official controller was present, which might have avoided the problem which
arose on that occasion. He had spoken to Mr Peake on this subject, and Geoff
had expressed his willingness to act as controller on future individual KO
evenings. Mr Peake confirmed this offer, pointing out that he usually attended
as an observer anyway. The meeting expressed support for this offer.
Mr
Hepworth informed the meeting that his Club Huddersfield, were considering
entering a further team in the Examiner with a view to encouraging their
juniors. He wondered how Clubs would respond to this. The meeting welcomed this
suggestion and wished the Huddersfield Club well in the venture.
The
President, Alec Ward, thanked Bill Lumley for the service he had given to the
Association over the past 28 years. On behalf of the Association and many
individual members, Mr Lumley was presented with a gift voucher, and a framed
picture by the local ‘Yorkshire Artist’, Ashley Jackson. Mr Lumley expressed
his deep gratitude to all those who had been in any way involved in this wonderful gesture. Such a
gift was a particularly inspiring choice, as it would be a constant reminder of
the many friends, which he had made over the past 28 years. Mr Lumley commented
that people who accept honorary positions invariably do so to a large degree
for the satisfaction, which they enjoy from doing a job well. All that is
expected in return, is that members appreciate the efforts that have been made
on their behalf. Bill concluded by thanking all those present who had
demonstrated by their warm and generous acclamation that his efforts over the
past 28 years had all been worthwhile! This had been a very warm and emotional
moment, and one, which Mr Lumley would never forget.
Tony
Midgley brought the meeting to a close by thanking Bill on behalf of all
Association members for the contribution, which he had made to chess in
Huddersfield over the past 28 years.

Meeting closed at 8.45 pm
